Deck Replacement on Cape Cod

Mussato Building Group replaces and repairs decks across Cape Cod. We tear out decks that are soft, loose, or past their life, check the ledger, posts, and footings underneath, and rebuild on a sound structure. We are a family-owned general contractor founded in 2004, with more than 100 projects completed and a 5.0 rating from 21 Google reviews.

Every replacement is overseen by Joe Mussato, and the new deck is permitted and inspected like a new build.

What We Offer

Repair or replace?

If the framing is sound and only some boards or railings are worn, a repair can be enough. If the joists, the ledger, or the posts are rotting, or the deck no longer meets code, replacing it is the safer choice and usually costs less over time. After we look underneath, we tell you which one your deck needs.

What a replacement includes

Tear-out and disposal of the old deck, an inspection of the footings and the ledger, new framing where it is needed, and new decking, railings, and stairs. A replacement is also the time to switch to composite or PVC boards, change the layout, or frame a platform for a hot tub.

Included
  • Tear-out and disposal of the old deck
  • Inspection of footings, posts, and ledger
  • New framing and ledger flashing where needed
  • Composite, PVC, and wood decking
  • New railings and stairs
  • Board and railing repairs on sound framing
  • Hot tub platforms and layout changes
  • Permits and inspection
Cape Cod Know-How

Signs a deck needs replacing

  • Soft or spongy boards

Boards that give underfoot usually mean rot in the boards or in the joists below them.

  • Loose railings

A railing that moves when you lean on it is a safety problem, and on older decks the posts are often the weak point.

  • Rot at the ledger

Where the deck meets the house, a failed flashing lets water rot both the ledger and the house framing behind it.

  • Rusted hardware

Near salt air, nails, joist hangers, and bolts corrode. Once the hardware goes, the structure is only as good as the wood around it.

  • Footings that moved

Posts that lean or a deck that slopes can mean footings that were never set below the frost line.

How It Works

Our Process

  1. Inspection

We look at the deck from underneath: footings, posts, beams, joists, ledger, and hardware.

  2. Repair or Replace Plan

You get a written estimate that says what can stay and what has to go, with material options side by side.

  3. Tear-Out & Framing

The old deck comes off, and the footings, ledger, and framing are fixed or rebuilt to the current code.

  4. New Deck & Inspection

Boards, railings, and stairs go on, the town inspects, and we walk the finished deck with you.

Questions

Deck Replacement FAQ

Can you replace just the deck boards?

Yes, if the framing underneath is sound. We check the joists, beams, ledger, and posts first. If they are in good shape, new boards and railings can go on the existing frame.

Do I need a permit to replace a deck?

Usually, yes. Rebuilding the structure of a deck needs a building permit, and the new deck has to meet the current Massachusetts building code, not the code from when the old one was built. We handle the permit.

Can you reuse my footings?

Sometimes. If the existing footings are in good shape and meet current code, we can reuse them. If not, we replace them so the new deck sits on a sound structure.

Should I switch to composite when I replace my deck?

It is worth pricing. Composite and PVC boards do not need sanding or staining and hold up well to salt air, so a replacement is a natural time to switch. We price both so you can compare.

Which towns do you replace decks in?

All 15 towns of Barnstable County: Barnstable, Bourne, Brewster, Chatham, Dennis, Eastham, Falmouth, Harwich, Mashpee, Orleans, Provincetown, Sandwich, Truro, Wellfleet, and Yarmouth.
