What We Offer

Remodeling an old finished basement

Many Cape basements were finished decades ago with wood paneling, carpet on concrete, and little or no insulation behind the walls. A remodel takes the space back to the foundation where it needs it, solves what caused the musty smell, and rebuilds the room to the same standard as the rest of the house.

New layout, same footprint

A remodel is the time to change how the basement works: open it up into one room, close off a home office or a gym, add a bathroom or a wet bar, or turn a corner into a guest bedroom with an egress window.

Included
  • Tear-out of old paneling, ceilings, and carpet
  • Moisture source found and fixed first
  • Insulation and vapor control on foundation walls
  • New layout, framing, and drywall
  • Wiring, lighting, and outlet updates
  • Basement bathrooms and wet bars
  • Egress windows for new bedrooms
  • Flooring, trim, doors, and paint
Cape Cod Know-How

What changes in a basement remodel

  • Find the moisture source

A musty smell usually means moisture behind the old finishes. We open the walls, find where it comes from, and fix it before anything new goes in.

  • Insulate the foundation

Old basements often have fiberglass against bare concrete, which traps damp air. We rebuild the walls with insulation and vapor control made for below-grade walls.

  • Update wiring and lighting

Old basement wiring and a few ceiling bulbs rarely match a modern layout. New circuits, outlets, and recessed lighting go in before the drywall.

  • Add a bathroom or a bar

Plumbing below the main drain line can need a pump. We plan the drains, the venting, and the fixtures before we commit to a layout.

  • Bedrooms need egress

A new basement bedroom needs an egress window and, on septic, a Board of Health review under Title 5.

How It Works

Our Process

  1. Walkthrough

We look at what is there now, check for moisture and code issues, and talk through the new layout.

  2. Plan & Permits

You get a layout and a written estimate. We file the building permit and line up the licensed trades.

  3. Tear-Out & Rough-In

Old finishes come out, moisture and insulation get fixed, and the new framing, wiring, and plumbing go in.

  4. Finishes & Inspection

Drywall, flooring, trim, lighting, and paint. After the final inspection we walk the new space with you.

Questions

Basement Remodeling FAQ

What is the difference between finishing and remodeling a basement?

Finishing turns raw space, bare concrete and open joists, into living space. Remodeling starts with a basement that was finished before and rebuilds it: new layout, insulation, wiring, and finishes.

Do I need a permit to remodel a basement?

Yes, when the work changes walls, wiring, or plumbing. The building permit covers the construction, and licensed electricians and plumbers pull their own permits. We coordinate all of it.

Can you add a bathroom to my basement?

In most cases, yes. If the new fixtures sit below the main drain line, the bathroom needs a pump to lift the waste, which we plan from the start.

My finished basement smells musty. Can a remodel fix it?

Usually, because the remodel exposes the cause. The smell almost always comes from moisture, so we find and fix the source, then rebuild the walls and floor with materials made for basements.

Which towns do you remodel basements in?

All 15 towns of Barnstable County: Barnstable, Bourne, Brewster, Chatham, Dennis, Eastham, Falmouth, Harwich, Mashpee, Orleans, Provincetown, Sandwich, Truro, Wellfleet, and Yarmouth.
